Closed Alpha Closeout

Thank you for playing in the Closed Alpha! We met our internal goals for the test and we have been working to improve March of Giants based on key learnings across player communication, neutral objectives, itemization, match length, and much more. Your Post-Alpha survey feedback has been invaluable and we wanted to share a quick update on some of the things we have been working on based on the feedback we received.

Player Communication

During the Closed Alpha, in-game communication was limited to voice chat and pings. We saw frustration with these systems, especially for players still learning the map objectives and teams coordinating plays. We’re exploring additional ways for players to communicate, including clearer pings and improved visibility around key map elements.

Neutral Objectives

The tuning and rewards of the neutral objectives during the Closed Alpha had little impact. This led to situations where it was unclear when best to capture major neutral objectives as a team, or take smaller camps to optimize rotations. We are refining the importance of neutral objectives, so their role is clearer in moment-to-moment gameplay, including a more significant impact on match outcomes.

Itemization

For the Closed Alpha, we streamlined itemization to help players onboard quickly during the limited test window. While this made most items intuitive, it also led to repetitive builds and fewer reactive choices mid-match. We are reworking itemization to create more unique and strategic build paths in future gameplay.

Match Length

Many matches ran longer than we anticipated. In the Closed Alpha, players naturally adopted more defensive strategies while learning the Giants, the map layout, and how to maximize Soldiers and Battleworks. Giants like Victoria were also able to defend against multiple enemies when fighting near an Outpost or Bastion, making it very difficult for some team compositions to take objectives. This became more frustrating as matches progressed due to item power flattening out past the 30-minute mark, often resulting in stalemates. We’re approaching this issue from multiple angles, including adjustments to items, objectives, Giant kits, and the map layout. Our goal is to keep matches dynamic to ensure decisive conclusions when one team has an insurmountable lead, while preserving tension in close matches.

Looking Ahead

While these are some of the most common feedback topics we received, our teams are also diligently working on all other aspects of March of Giants, including improvements to the UI, onboarding, balance, game clarity, models, animations, soldier movements, and much more.

For the remainder of the year, we’ll focus on internal testing and revisions, so there will not be another public playtest until 2026. Our goal is to use this time to iterate on player feedback while expanding the number of playable Giants.

As a reminder, players from the Closed Alpha will be invited to future public tests. If you didn’t play in the Closed Alpha, you can head to the March of Giants Steam page and click “Request Access” for an invite to the next phase.

Thanks again for your ongoing support! We’re very excited to share even more of our development progress in the coming months.
